WHAT IS OCD?
OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, is a form of anxiety that causes people to have unwanted thoughts, ideas, or sensations repeatedly. These thoughts or sensations are known as obsessions. The obsessions may drive the person to do repeated actions, which are known as compulsions. For example, someone with OCD may have an intense thought that turns into fear of germs. That, in turn, causes repetitive hand-washing beyond what is normal.
This is just one example of the OCD cycle. Obsessions and compulsions can be anything, not just hand-washing. When the cycle interferes with a person’s daily activities or social interactions, it is considered a disorder that requires treatment.
IS OCD CURABLE?
OCD does not have a cure. There is no way to stop the intrusive thoughts or feelings that lead to compulsions. In fact, everyone has these thoughts or feelings, but someone struggling with OCD will react differently to them than someone who does not have the disorder. However, people living with this condition can learn to manage it and live a great, fulfilling life. OCD therapy in Charlotte and Matthews can help.

HOW DOES OCD THERAPY WORK?
OCD therapy uses a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that repeatedly exposes the patient to a trigger that would potentially trigger compulsions. With the help of an obsessive-compulsive disorder therapist, the person learns to prevent the response or compulsion, and slowly learns to handle triggers without giving in to compulsions. If done slowly and under the care of a therapist, this can be a highly effective way to address OCD and teach an individual not to let compulsions rule their lives, even when they are repeatedly exposed to triggers that cause compulsions. This type of therapy is known as exposure and response prevention therapy, or ERP, and it is highly effective at opening the door to a normal life even with OCD.
